Micah True 1954 – 2012

Yesterday’s blog entitled “Born To Run” was inspired by the ultramarathon I’d just run – in turn inspired by the book “Born To Run” by Christopher McDougall.micah-true

In a tragic twist, I awoke this morning to find Facebook and Twitter alive with reports that Micah True, aka Caballo Blanco or The White Horse had been found dead after going missing last week on a 12-mile run  in southwest New Mexico.

He was one of the key characters in Born To Run, indeed the book opens with the sentence

FOR DAYS, I’d been searching Mexico’s Sierra Madre for the phantom known as Caballo Blanco – the White Horse”

Caballo was famously aloof, and would often disappear for days on end, running through the mountains, shirtless with just a water bottle. He was a legend in the ultra running world, a truly humble man who lived, and died doing what he loved.

Last September Caballo came to the UK and did a series of talks – there was one in Bristol. I thought about going, but it was on a weekday evening and would mean battling with traffic after work and getting home late. Well – I’ll never have the chance again now – so there’s my lesson for today, when life gives you an opportunity – grab it, because it may not be there tomorrow.

“Run easy, light, smoooooth [sic], happy…and run free! Andale!” – Micah True RIP
